Week 20 on the Official Ironman Plan. Messing it up so far.

failedThis is the first week on the “official” 20 weeks-to-Ironman plan! I had visions – after practicing tapering and enjoying a low-key/recovery week – of blazing on into week 20 and setting the world on fire. No go. Off to a very rocky start. That’s OK! Good to mess it up and get off plan, right from the get-go! Then the pressure to be perfect – or nearly so – is off.

Sunday – Off.

Monday – Started off as bad day emotionally, headache came in the afternoon. I did my 45-minute run. I skipped the long swim session. I didn’t feel well and figured I had a swim session in the evening, then continued to feel worse and decided not to go to swim lesson.

I was disappointed by this. I was looking forward to moving into my final 20 weeks of the “official” Ironman training plan and rocking it. I gave myself and good shake and thought, “Ah well, can just get rid of any visions of following the final 20 week plan perfectly out of the way Day 1!” Alright! That pressure’s off! = 45 minutes

Tuesday – 60 minutes on bike including 40 minutes of a cycling class (20 minutes on my own). The Cycling Class schedule doesn’t always line up with mine! Then I did a 45-minute run. I decided to do it inside to simplify clothing and not head outside with a totally sweaty under layer. Wasn’t fully fueled, It was a tough run. Powered through mentally. Still not enjoying the rocky start to this training plan! = 105 minutes

Wednesday – Shorter swim session on schedule, did the longer session I missed on Monday.

wu = 200m swim, 200 kick, 200 pull, 200 swim. This was my first time doing pull with that float device between my legs. Whoa, I felt wobbly on one side. Makes me wonder what’s off kilter on my overall stroke. I’m thinking my left shoulder is not as flexible as it can be. I’ll ask my Coach if she can do a functional training assessment with me to check mobility and strength the next time she’s in town.

main = 1500m. Felt long, but totally doable. (skipped cool down)  = 75 minutes

Thursday – Was planning a bike ride with my friend Betsy. We (she) was tracking the weather. We were going to possibly have some elements to deal with (good practice!). Yet, then we got an a.m. orthopedic appointment for Jake’s fractured thumb and I canceled on her. (But I had a great morning with Jake and I’ll ride with Betsy next week).

So back to original plan: 90-minute run outside went well; warm at times, cold at times. I went a little farther than 90 minutes because I had to pee so bad. So, I ran an extra 5 minutes or so to Navy Pier for the bathroom. Averaged 10 flat, glad that an easy effort with some wind and drizzle equaled 10 flat! = 95 minutes

Wednesday and Thursday were tough days emotionally. Felt I needed to start a conversation with my husband about when I’ve had enough dimming to call it depression. (That wasn’t fun. I’ve since done some exploration – with professionals who know what they’re talking about – and have determined I’m not depressed. I’ve put some other measures in place, and got myself in a more positive place within the week.)

Friday – Cycling class (60 min) and swim session (50 min). Felt strong today. Was strong in cycling class and am now in a position to do the full swim workout just as prescribed!! Which is AWESOME! (Only took me 7 months! :-))

Wu – 400, last 50 of each 100 was kick.

Main – 8 x 100 = 25 Easy, 25 build, 25 easy, 25 hand

Cd – 6 x 25 (did these all bilateral)

= 110 minutes

Saturday – Off. Decided to move bike ride to Sunday after being out late the night before at Clearbrook’s Shining Star Ball.

TOTAL = 430 minutes =  7 hours, 10 minutes

  • Swim – 135 minutes = 31%
  • Bike – 110 minutes = 26%
  • Run – 185 minutes = 43%
